As a first-generation American, Cat Chen learned a thing or two about resilience from her own family. She then applied that energy towards cleaning up the fragrance industry—literally and figuratively. “As I watched my parents pursue the American dream, I learned that anything was possible when you work hard,” the Skylar founder and CEO says. “At first, we were told it wasn’t possible to create hypoallergenic fragrances that smelled amazing. Nevertheless, we persisted.” And we’re so grateful that you did, Cat.

The birth of Skylar
Before founding Skylar, a clean and conscious fragrance and body care brand, Cat Chen was the VP of Operations at The Honest Company, a clean baby and household products brand. Soon after becoming a mother, she noticed her daughter Anne had an allergic reaction to her everyday fragrance, and this was the leitmotif and the spark that ignited the creation of Skylar.
No compromises: 100% clean scents with 0% harmful ingredients
A lot of people in the industry tried to dissuade Chen from embarking on the path of the clean-yet-gorgeous-scents. She was asked to choose either clean or dreamy, gorgeous scents. In her mind, there was no room for compromise. Luckily for all of us, she found a way and created a collection of scents that are clean, hypoallergenic, and safe for sensitive skin, but suitable for all. She also ensured that every ingredient was both vegan and cruelty-free, and came housed in sustainable, eco-friendly packaging. Plus, they smell amazing on their own or layered with other scents from the brand.
“I love all of the Skylar fragrances, but one that I am wearing a lot is Salt Air,” Cat Chen says. “I love spending time at the beach with my daughter, and that is what inspired me to create this scent. I love this fragrance because it literally smells like you’re standing at the edge of the water on a perfect day at the beach.”
